Battler offense held to lowest scoring output of season
Warriors drop 8th straight game
RICHMOND, Ind. – Earlham College men's basketball dropped its eighth straight game with a 58-56 heartbreaker against visiting Edgewood College on Saturday afternoon. The Battlers (4-16) saw a furious rally come up just short as the Eagles (7-12) extended their win streak to four games.
Trailing 28-21 at halftime, Earlham shot just 30.0% from the field in the second half, but held Edgewood to 23.5% shooting after the break. The Battlers trailed by 10 points with 7:33 remaining, but rallied with eight straight points to make it a two-point game with 4:18 showing on the clock. After trading buckets, the Battlers got the ball back down 56-54 with 1:10 remaining, but turned the ball over on a travel.
Edgewood missed a pair of free throws with 20 seconds to go, but grabbed the offensive rebound. The Eagles were called for a five-second violation, giving Earlham the ball back with 13.6 seconds on the clock. Coming out of a timeout, the Battlers were unable to get a shot off as the horn sounded, giving the Eagles the two-point victory.
The Battlers were led by sophomore guard Kobe Long-Weber's 16 points, along with a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore center Chase Spears finished with 13 points, while junior guard Jamel Hughes added 11 points.
Edgewood was paced by senior guard Luke Meinholz's 12 points, while sophomore forward Mason Dopirak chipped in 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Earlham returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 24, when the Battlers host Manchester University in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
