Uzbekistan Falls to Qatar in World Cup Qualifiers Despite Fayzullaev's Heroics
Fayzullaev's Goal Not Enough to Secure Victory
Despite a valiant effort, the Uzbekistan national football team suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Qatar in their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match on Thursday. Uzbekistan's hopes of securing a positive result were boosted by Eldor Fayzullaev's 70th-minute equalizer, but Qatar's Abdulaziz Hatem netted the winning goal just seven minutes later.
Qatar Dominates First Half, Takes Early Lead
Qatar asserted their dominance early in the match, controlling possession and creating several scoring opportunities. Their efforts paid off in the 37th minute when Akram Afif fired a low shot past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Botirali Ergashev to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Fayzullaev Equalizes in Second Half
Uzbekistan showed more determination in the second half, and their efforts were rewarded when Fayzullaev found the back of the net in the 70th minute. The forward latched onto a cross from Sardor Rashidov and headed the ball into the far corner of the goal.
Hatem's Late Winner Secures Qatar's Victory
However, Qatar's joy was short-lived. Just seven minutes after Uzbekistan's equalizer, Hatem capitalized on a defensive error to restore Qatar's lead. The midfielder received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the top corner of the net.
Uzbekistan's World Cup Hopes Dwindle
The defeat leaves Uzbekistan with an uphill battle to qualify for the World Cup. With only two points from four matches, they are currently fifth in Group A, seven points behind leaders Qatar. Uzbekistan's next match is against Bangladesh on October 13, and they will need to secure a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive.
