UNLV's new 'Bear' ready to prove himself against Memphis' big men
UNLV basketball's new 7-foot center Keshon Gilbert is eager to make his mark against Memphis' talented frontcourt.
The 24-year-old Gilbert, who transferred from Texas A&M, is known for his strong post presence and defensive prowess. He will be counted on to help UNLV compete in the rugged American Athletic Conference.
Gilbert, nicknamed "Bear," is averaging 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Rebels (9-4). He has also blocked 15 shots, which ranks second in the AAC.
The Rebels will face a tough test against Memphis (10-3), which boasts one of the top frontcourts in the country. The Tigers are led by 6-foot-11 center Jalen Duren, who is averaging 12.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Gilbert said he is looking forward to the challenge of facing Duren and the rest of Memphis' big men.
"I'm excited to play against them," Gilbert said. "They're a really good team with a lot of size. It will be a good test for us."
UNLV coach Kevin Kruger said he is confident that Gilbert can hold his own against Memphis' frontcourt.
"Bear is a tough, physical player who is not afraid to bang down low," Kruger said. "He's going to be a big part of our success this season."
The Rebels and Tigers will tip off at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the FedExForum in Memphis.
