Saqib Mahmood Admits He Did Not Deserve Central Contract
England Pacer Opens Up About Injury Struggles
Star Bowler Acknowledges Limited Contributions
In a candid interview, English pacer Saqib Mahmood has admitted that he did not merit a central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the upcoming season.
The 26-year-old had been included in the 12-man group of centrally contracted players for 2021-22, but a string of injury setbacks limited his contributions to the England team.
Mahmood, who has played 11 Tests and 18 One-Day Internationals for England, expressed his understanding of the ECB's decision.
"To be honest, I didn't really deserve it (central contract) this year," said Mahmood.
"I've been injured for a long time, and I haven't played as much cricket as I would have liked."
Despite his struggles with injuries, Mahmood remains determined to regain his place in the England team and prove his worth.
"I'm working hard to get back to my best, and I'm confident that I can get back to the level I was at before," said Mahmood.
Mahmood played a key role in England's Test series victory in the West Indies earlier this year, taking 12 wickets in three matches.
However, he has missed the ongoing Test series against South Africa due to a stress fracture in his back.
Mahmood is hopeful of returning to action in time for the limited-overs series against India in July.
