Report: Argentina make U-Turn on Nico Gonzalez call-up
Amid concerns over player fitness
Nico Gonzalez was initially called up to the Argentina squad for the upcoming friendlies against Honduras and Jamaica, but has since been replaced by Angel Correa. The Fiorentina forward has been struggling with a muscle injury and is not expected to be fit in time for the matches.
González has been in good form for Fiorentina this season, scoring 6 goals in 14 Serie A appearances. However, he missed the club's last two matches with a muscle injury. It is unclear how long González will be out for, but it is likely that he will miss the upcoming friendlies.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has opted to replace González with Angel Correa. The Atlético Madrid forward has been in good form for his club this season, scoring 5 goals in 16 La Liga appearances. Correa has also been capped 22 times by Argentina, so he is a more experienced player than González.
Argentina will face Honduras on September 23rd and Jamaica on September 27th. The friendlies will be Argentina's last matches before the World Cup, which begins in November. Scaloni will be hoping to use the matches to fine-tune his squad and prepare for the tournament.
