Lee Carsley praises England youngsters after Kane gamble pays off in Greece
Gareth Southgate's decision to start Harry Kane on the bench was vindicated as England's youngsters impressed in a 1-0 win over Greece.
The Three Lions dominated possession and created a number of chances, with Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka particularly impressive.
England manager Gareth Southgate has praised his young players after they impressed in a 1-0 win over Greece on Tuesday night.
Southgate made wholesale changes to the team that started the 1-0 win over Albania on Saturday, with only Conor Coady and Bukayo Saka retaining their places.
The changes did not disrupt England's rhythm, however, with Phil Foden and Emile Smith Rowe linking up well in midfield and Saka a constant threat down the left flank.
England took the lead in the 29th minute when Saka's cross was headed home by Tammy Abraham.
Greece rarely threatened, with England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale a spectator for most of the match.
Southgate said he was pleased with the performance of his young players, who showed that they are capable of playing at international level.
"I thought the young players were excellent," Southgate said.
"They showed great energy and enthusiasm, and they created a number of chances.
"It was a good performance all round, and I'm pleased with the way the team played."
England will now face San Marino in their final World Cup qualifier on Monday night.
Southgate is expected to make changes to the team for that match, but he will be encouraged by the performance of his young players in Greece.
The win over Greece was England's sixth in a row, and they have now kept five clean sheets in that run.
Southgate's team are top of their World Cup qualifying group, and they are now just one win away from securing their place at the tournament in Qatar next year.
