Kyrie Irving sits out against the Jazz because of a strained right shoulder
What happened?
Kyrie Irving of the Dallas Mavericks will miss Tuesday night's game against the Utah Jazz due to a right shoulder strain, the team announced.
Irving was injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 110-104 win over the Sacramento Kings. He collided with Kings forward Keegan Murray while driving to the basket and landed awkwardly on his right shoulder.
How severe is the injury?
The severity of Irving's injury is not yet known. He will undergo an MRI on Tuesday to determine the extent of the damage.
However, the Mavericks are hopeful that Irving will not miss significant time. He is considered day-to-day for now.
Who will start in Irving's place?
With Irving out, Josh Green is expected to start at point guard for the Mavericks. Green has started 14 games this season and is averaging 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.
The Mavericks will also need more production from their other guards, such as Jalen Brunson and Spencer Dinwiddie.
How will this impact the Mavericks?
Irving's absence is a significant blow to the Mavericks. He is their leading scorer (27.1 points per game) and assist man (5.3 assists per game).
However, the Mavericks have a deep roster and should be able to weather Irving's absence. They are currently 29-26 this season and are in sixth place in the Western Conference.
When will Irving return?
The Mavericks have not announced a timetable for Irving's return. However, they are hopeful that he will not miss significant time.
Irving's next chance to play will be Thursday night when the Mavericks host the Memphis Grizzlies.
