Iniesta Becomes Owner of a Football Club
Andres Iniesta, the former Barcelona and Spain midfielder, has acquired a majority stake in Albacete Balompié, a team in the Spanish second division.
The deal was announced on Thursday, May 26, 2023, and sees Iniesta become the club's largest shareholder, with a 90% stake. Albacete is a club close to Iniesta's heart, as it is the team he supported as a child and where he began his professional career.
Iniesta, who won nine La Liga titles and four Champions League titles with Barcelona, said he was "delighted" to be able to invest in the club.
"Albacete is the club of my heart, and I am very excited to be able to contribute to its future," he said. "I am convinced that we can achieve great things together."
Iniesta retired from playing in 2018 and has since been working as a coach and pundit. He is currently the head coach of Vissel Kobe in Japan.
Albacete is currently 13th in the Spanish second division, and Iniesta will be hoping to help the club achieve promotion to the top flight.
