Slow Start for the Gamecocks
The Gamecocks came out of the gates slowly against Coppin State on Sunday night, trailing 13-12 in the first six minutes of the game. The Eagles were able to hit a couple of early threes and take advantage of some sloppy play by the Gamecocks.
South Carolina was able to tie the game up at 17-17 with 12 minutes to go in the first half, but Coppin State would not go away. The Eagles hit another three and took a 20-17 lead with 10 minutes to go in the half.
Gamecocks Find Their Rhythm
The Gamecocks finally found their rhythm late in the first half. Sindarius Thornwell hit a three-pointer to give South Carolina a 22-20 lead with eight minutes to go in the half, and the Gamecocks never looked back.
South Carolina went on a 12-2 run to close out the half and took a 34-22 lead into the break. Thornwell led the way for the Gamecocks with 10 points in the first half, while Chris Silva added 8 points and 6 rebounds.
Coppin State Can't Keep Up
Coppin State tried to keep up with the Gamecocks in the second half, but they were no match for South Carolina's size and athleticism. The Gamecocks quickly pushed their lead to 20 points, and they cruised to a 92-60 victory.
Thornwell led the way for the Gamecocks with 18 points, while Silva added 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Gamecocks shot 48% from the field, while Coppin State shot just 33%.
Banner Night for the Gamecocks
The win was a special one for the Gamecocks, who honored their 2017 Final Four team before the game. The 2017 team was the first South Carolina team to reach the Final Four, and they were honored with a banner that will hang in the Colonial Life Arena.
The win also gives the Gamecocks a 3-0 record on the season. The Gamecocks will be back in action on Friday when they host Wofford at the Colonial Life Arena.
