Game recap, analysis: Arizona State "upsets" Grand Canyon at Phoenix Suns arena
A look at the Arizona State Sun Devils men's basketball team's thrilling 80-75 upset victory over the Grand Canyon Antelopes at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
A sold-out crowd of 14,413 witnessed the Sun Devils (3-1) rally from a 10-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Antelopes (2-2), who were receiving votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll.
ASU was led by senior forward Kimani Lawrence, who scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field. Junior guard Desmond Cambridge Jr. added 19 points and six rebounds, while sophomore forward Jalen Graham chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds.
GCU was led by senior guard Jovan Blacksher Jr., who scored 18 points and dished out five assists. Junior guard Chance McMillian added 16 points, while senior forward Oscar Frayer had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Sun Devils shot 48.6% from the field, including 40.0% from three-point range. The Antelopes shot 40.3% from the field, including 30.0% from three-point range.
ASU outrebounded GCU 35-29 and had 12 assists to GCU's nine.
The Sun Devils took a 42-37 lead into halftime, but GCU opened the second half on a 10-0 run to take a 47-42 lead. ASU responded with a 12-2 run of its own to retake the lead, and the two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the game.
The Sun Devils were able to pull away in the final minutes by making their free throws. ASU hit 10 of its 12 free throws in the final two minutes of the game, while GCU hit just 3 of its 6 free throws.
The win was a big one for ASU, which is looking to make a statement in the Pac-12 this season. The Sun Devils have now won three of their first four games, and they will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Monday.
GCU, meanwhile, will look to rebound from the loss when it hosts the Weber State Wildcats on Monday.
