NBC News Announces Major Shakeup in Morning Lineup
Melvin to Join Savannah Guthrie as Co-Anchor in September
In a major shakeup to its morning lineup, NBC News has announced that Craig Melvin will replace Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of the 'TODAY' show starting in September. Kotb will remain with the show in a new role, while Melvin will join current co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.
Melvin, who currently anchors the third hour of 'TODAY' and hosts the network's weekly newsmagazine 'Dateline NBC,' has been with NBC News since 2011. He has filled in as co-anchor of the 'TODAY' show on numerous occasions and has been widely praised for his versatility and rapport with viewers.
Kotb, who has been co-anchoring the 'TODAY' show since 2018, will transition to a new role as co-anchor of a new hour of 'TODAY' that will air at 10 a.m. She will also continue to host the fourth hour of 'TODAY' with Jenna Bush Hager.
The changes to the 'TODAY' show lineup are part of a broader effort by NBC News to refresh its morning programming and attract a wider audience. The network has been facing increasing competition from ABC's 'Good Morning America' and CBS's 'CBS Mornings.'
Melvin's appointment as co-anchor of the 'TODAY' show is a significant milestone for the veteran journalist. He will be the first African American to hold the position on a full-time basis.
The changes to the 'TODAY' show lineup will take effect on September 5th.
