Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission discusses wolf-related concerns from rancher
CPW prepares for upcoming wolf release
At its July 14 meeting, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission heard concerns about wolves from a rancher in Moffat County. The rancher, who asked not to be identified, said that he is worried about the safety of his livestock and his family if wolves are reintroduced to the area.
CPW’s wolf management plan
CPW is currently developing a wolf management plan that will guide the reintroduction and management of wolves in Colorado. The plan is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The plan will include measures to address the concerns of ranchers and other stakeholders. These measures may include compensation for livestock losses, non-lethal deterrents, and increased law enforcement presence.
Wolf reintroduction timeline
CPW is planning to release 10 to 15 wolves into Moffat County in the fall of 2023. The wolves will be captured from Idaho and Montana.
The wolves will be fitted with GPS collars so that CPW can track their movements. CPW will also monitor the wolves’ impact on livestock and wildlife.
Public input
CPW is seeking public input on the wolf management plan. The public can submit comments online or at public meetings. The deadline for public comment is August 15, 2022.
