Nitto ATP Finals 2024: Alexander Zverev defeats Casper Ruud in Turin to claim second title

Zverev successfully defends title in Turin with a 7-6(7-6), 6-3 triumph over Ruud

Alexander Zverev defeated Casper Ruud 7-6(7-6), 6-3 on Sunday at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin to claim his second title at the season-ending event.

Zverev, who also won the title in 2021, became the first player to successfully defend his title at the Nitto ATP Finals since Roger Federer in 2006-07.

The 26-year-old German saved two set points in the first set tie-break and then broke Ruud's serve twice in the second set to secure victory in one hour and 34 minutes.

"It's an amazing feeling to win this tournament again," said Zverev. "It's one of the biggest tournaments in the world and to win it twice is a dream come true."

"I played some of my best tennis this week and I'm really happy with the way I performed," he added.

Ruud, who was appearing in his first Nitto ATP Finals, was gracious in defeat.

"Alexander played a great match today," said Ruud. "He deserved to win."

"I'm proud of the way I played this week and I'm looking forward to coming back next year and trying to win the title," he added.

Zverev's victory in Turin means that he has now won two of the three biggest titles in men's tennis, having also won the US Open in 2020.

He is also the first player to win both the Nitto ATP Finals and the US Open in the same year since Andre Agassi in 1999.

With his victory in Turin, Zverev has also moved up to No. 2 in the ATP Rankings, behind only Novak Djokovic.
